We tested our super old outboard in a 55 gallon drum years ago when we were trying to make sure it would still run before putting it in the river.

And you do know this isn't the 1800's YMCA right? Its not pushed on anyone and isn't really even a big part of anything, not even close. There's a reason its been shortened down to the 'Y' in advertising, there's no pandering to christians or just males either. but yeah that was my point I just worded it wrong, the margin is good but you arent making any money if you are only netting 1-2 dollars an item.

but a place that buys and sells used/new firearms and repairs them, same with fishing supplies and outdoors equipment, might do well in the right location with the right services offered and business model.

i really think taxidermy would be a big addition to a store like that, many people love to have things stuffed and from what ive researched its not a very expensive service to offer. It takes time and skill, but you can make good money on it.

whats the profit margin on something like a tree stand or a blind? those items like that could also really add to the bottom line, especially in this area. A lot of people use tree stands, blinds not as much but since hunting is so popular here, a place that could take care of all your hunting/fishing needs may succeed.

It wont make anybody a millionaire IMO, but a good solid living

I agree with Biggin I do believe in the right location, which would be in the WM shopping center or around Advance Auto, the type of store he is talking about would/should do well. The two gun shops in Coeburn do offer repair service and Beverly's sell's and services bows as well but an all inclusive place in that location would/should do well and pull customers from these others. It would a good bit of capital to get started and established especially since you will need a very good staff of workers that are already very knowledgeable and skilled in doing the work. We're not talking minimum wage cashier's all these are skill people that already have good jobs that allow them to do know this stuff as a hobby now, and would have to have a salary equal to what they make now or could make elsewhere. I have put enough thought into this that I already know most of the people I would try and hire to work there.

I think something like a ben and jerrys would do well around here.

Starbucks may suck with some of their basic coffee's, however, they are 1 of the few who actually offer different flavor hot chocolates and specialty drinks.

and yes, people would buy it just to show their cup, but who cares as long as they're paying and making money for the business.

and back to an earlier post, they don't franchise out, they just allow Target, and other areas, like airports, etc, to buy a "license" to sell it.

Pretty much the same thing Steer maybe just the wording I used calling it a franchise . Target buys the merchandise , staffs the store and pays a percentage of the sales to Starbucks . They also use only Starbucks equipment

my dad and I have looked into several different options, from everything from striping parking lots and cleaning coal trucks, but its very hard to make money around here. you are more likely to make money offering a service than relying on retail sales.

how many sporting good stores are in Wise/Norton?
Big Stone has one that does pretty well, but I think a nice sporting goods/hunting/fishing store would do well in that area. a place that sells all sorts of outdoors stuff, works on rifles and such, etc...

Petsmart isn't a good substitute. They only sell 1-2 premium brands of dog food, they sell no raw, no feeze dried raw, no raw bones, etc.

There are a lot of "dog" people like me in the area, and we all travel out of area to get the supplies we need. Dog people spend $.

I couldn't agree more!!!! I have two cats and have to go to Kingsport to get their food. It is at Pet Smart, but I can't even get any store around here to stock it. It's one of the premium brands. People look at me like I'm crazy when I check out with seven or eight cases of food. I tell them them I'm from Wise and can't get the food anywhere around here. The reply I ALWAYS get is "We get alot of people from over in that area." Cat people spend too!!

As PVFAN said we need a good Sports Bar in Norton. A nice place similar to Bailey's or that type design. Big, wide open space, with numerous TV's all over the place. Be known as the place with the largest number of beers on tap (which around here wouldn't be hard) Mosby's used to have 19 on tap, most other places have 3 or 4.

Have all the games PPV events, packages, etc to draw in the crowd. Have pool tables, dart boards, etc and run tournaments on select weekends.

Limit your food options to what most bars would sell (wings, appetizers, sandwiches, and a few larger entree type meals)

Just a thought, that would be something I would imagine would go over very, very well around here. Make it authentic to the area, doesn't have to be a chain. Call it "The Varsity" or something like that and have different sections of the building in honor of local athletes who went pro, local schools, their accomplishments, etc.
